Annie & Kate — Epic Pine-Forest Night
Reyes is closed out by Hwy 33 — so here's every closure-proof way to a big-pine, dark-sky night, ranked and verified.
Reyes Peak is out — Highway 33 above Ojai is fully closed Aug 22–25 and again Aug 28–31. The beach is dropped. So this is the pivot: a certain, epic pine-forest night that never touches Hwy 33. Every option below was checked on Sun Aug 23, 2026 against current fire and road closures — no more surprises.

The call — fastest read
- Closest + most like Pacifico → Mt Pinos cluster (Campo Alto / McGill). I-5 to Frazier Park, ~1.5–2 hr, fully paved, big Jeffrey pines, the best dark skies in Southern California, and outside every closure. Catch: no drinking water — carry all of it.
- Most certain (you can lock a booked site) → Table Mountain, Big Pines. Reservable online (115 sites), has water + flush toilets, densest drive-up pines. ~2 hr via I-15 / Cajon / Wrightwood.
- Best comforts fallback → Barton Flats (San Bernardino). Hot showers + water, completely insulated from the road closures. ~2 hr via I-10 / CA-38.
Before you leave — 4 things
- Grab a free California Campfire Permit (5-min online quiz): preventwildfiresca.org — needed for a stove or a fire.
- 60-second fresh-fire check: watchduty.org.
- Top off ALL your water. None of the Mt Pinos-cluster sites have potable water. Bring drinking + cooking + cleanup.
- Layers. Nights at 7,500–8,300 ft run cold even in August.
Day-of confirmation line (recorded info on a Sunday): Mt Pinos Ranger District (661) 245-3731.
World 1 — Mt Pinos / Frazier Park (PRIMARY: closest, fully paved, closure-proof)
Route for all of these: I-5 → Frazier Park exit (Frazier Mountain Park Rd) → Cuddy Valley Rd, then either Mil Potrero Hwy → Cerro Noroeste Rd (Mt Abel side) or Mt Pinos Hwy (Mt Pinos side). All paved — Forester-easy. None inside any fire closure; the Timber Fire is ~150 mi away at Big Sur.
1. Campo Alto (Mt Abel) — richest forest, densest big pines. ~8,250 ft. Old-growth Jeffrey pine + white fir, end-of-road privacy. The densest, biggest conifers of the drive-up options — best tree-tent odds. 15 sites, mostly reservable (recreation.gov #273842) with ~4 held first-come; grab an open same-day reservable one before you leave signal. No water · vault toilets · fire rings.
2. McGill — best walk-up odds (18 first-come sites). ~7,400 ft. Dense Jeffrey + ponderosa; the most walk-up sites in the cluster, so the best chance you simply drive in and get one. 73 sites (54 reservable recreation.gov #231962 + 18 FCFS), ~$30. No water · vault toilets · fire ring + grill. Largest/busiest, least private.
3. Chula Vista Walk-In — storybook big pines + dark sky, free. 8,300 ft, on the Mt Pinos summit. FS's own words: "twelve campsites shaded by large Jeffrey pines." Premier California stargazing. First-come, FREE, but a **¼-mile gear carry** from the lot (harder to rig a car-based tree tent). No water · vault toilets · fire rings.
4. Mt Pinos Campground — drive-to-your-site Jeffrey pine. ~7,800 ft, closest drive-up to the Chula Vista stargazing lot. 19 sites (15 reservable recreation.gov #273875 + 4 FCFS), ~$30. No water · vault toilets · fire rings. Only 4 first-come — thin margin, better with a same-day reservable.
5. Marian — free & primitive, but a dirt-spur gamble. ~6,590 ft, real Jeffrey pines but a thin/exposed stand. ~4–5 sites, FCFS, free — reached by a steep, narrow dirt spur (high-clearance recommended; gate has historically been locked) and NO toilet at all. With a kid, the no-toilet is a real downside. Call the district on the spur first.

World 2 — Angeles / Wrightwood + San Bernardino (farther; mind the Hwy 2 closure)
Heads-up: Angeles Crest (Hwy 2) has a ~27-mile indefinite closure (east of Newcomb's Ranch to Big Pines). It splits these into two road-worlds that don't connect — route deliberately. Forest is OPEN, no active fire, but fire danger is "Very High."
1. Table Mountain (Big Pines) — the most certain pick (book it) + water. ~7,000 ft, densest big-pine drive-up, ~115 sites, reservable: recreation.gov #233735 — lock tonight's site online now. Potable water · flush + vault toilets · fire ring + bear box per site. Route: I-15 → Cajon Pass → SR-138 W → SR-2 into Wrightwood → Big Pines (NOT via La Cañada). Sites are sloped. Info: Big Pines Station (760) 249-3504.
2. Chilao – Little Pines — most certain to walk in, closest. ~5,300 ft, 84 first-come sites across two loops (west of the closure, straight up CA-2 from La Cañada). Pines are sparser/open here, and water is uncertain — bring all your own. Vault toilets · fire rings. $20. Info: ANF (626) 574-1613.
3. Grassy Hollow (Big Pines) — small, in the pines. ~7,300 ft, 10 tent-only sites, reservable recreation.gov #10322578, has water + vault toilets. Same Wrightwood/Big Pines route as Table Mountain. Only 10 sites — book first.
4. Horse Flats — quiet west-side backup. ~5,600 ft, well-shaded, 26 first-come sites via CA-2 + Santa Clara Divide Rd spur (confirm the spur is open). NO water at all. $20.
5. Barton Flats (San Bernardino) — best comforts, closure-proof. ~6,335 ft, dense Jeffrey/ponderosa — genuinely epic pine. Flush toilets + hot showers + water + bear box = the most kid-friendly here. 51 sites, reservable recreation.gov #231975. Route: I-10 → Redlands → CA-38 (verified open) → Angelus Oaks. Info: SBNF (909) 382-2600. Legal wood fire in the rings.
Ruled out — and why
- Reyes Peak / Pine Mountain — Hwy 33 closed Aug 22–25 & Aug 28–31. The whole reason for this pivot.
- Chuchupate — road-paving closure Jul 27 – Sep 22, 2026 (your night is inside it).
- Mt Pacifico — access road 3N17 washed out / rockfall; hike-in only, not a stock-Forester drive-up. (Save it for a future backpack — beautiful dark-sky spot.)
- Buckhorn — the best trees of all, but sits inside the indefinite Hwy 2 closure. Unreachable tonight.
- Bandido / Jackson Flat — group-only, reservation-only (locked gate / $180+).
- Toad Springs, Nettle Springs, Chuchupate — wrong ecosystem (pinyon/sage, not lush pine); Nettle Springs also needs Hwy 33.
Fire rules & permits (verified Aug 2026)
- Campfires/charcoal only in the metal fire rings at developed campgrounds on the designated list (all the developed sites above qualify). Dispersed camping = camp stove only, plus that free California Campfire Permit. No wood fire outside a developed ring.
- Adventure Pass ($5/day, $30/yr) covers day-use parking; developed campgrounds charge a per-night fee instead. Not needed for a first-come developed site in late August.
The rig & the tree tent

Stock Forester Wilderness (AWD, ~9.2" clearance, no low-range) — every primary option above is fully paved, so no dirt gamble (skip Marian's spur and Half Moon's creek crossings unless the district confirms them dry). The Tentsile tree tent needs a triangle of three sturdy pines ~6 ft up — Campo Alto and Chula Vista have the best odds, but it's always a scout-on-arrival call, so bring the ground-tent backup. Inspect for dead limbs overhead before rigging.
Honest limits: it's a Sunday, so the ranger office is on recorded info only — recreation.gov and the live alerts page (fs.usda.gov/r05/lospadres/alerts) are your day-of ground truth. No source can promise a specific site's exact tree spacing; that's decided when you walk the loop.
